Pathway 2 & Pathway 4
The Nicene Creed was issued by the Council of Nicea in 325 and then modified by the Council of Constantinople in 381. The creed was probably based on the Baptismal Creed used by the Church in Jerusalem. We say this creed almost every Sunday but what does it mean? This class will focus on (1) the Trinitarian structure of the creed (2) each of the individual affirmations which it makes and (3) the biblical foundations of each affirmation. Having done these things, we will then explore the spiritual and moral implications of the creed. By the conclusion of the class, we will see that the Nicene Creed provides and firm foundation for faithful Christian living and mission in a complex and fractured world. The resource book for this class is Bishop Robert Barron’s Light From Light: A Theological Reflection on the Nicene Creed and can be purchased in St. Peter’s Bookstore.
