Kneeling With The Giants: Learning to Pray with History’s Best Teachers

Led by Ben Praamsma, Charles Simeon Fellow

What can our spiritual mothers and fathers teach us about prayer? Over the course of the summer, we will kneel alongside St. Benedict of Nursia, Theresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Ignatius of Loyola, George Herbert, and John Calvin, learning their unique gifts to the great tradition of prayer. We’ll get to know these friends and their stories, but also spend time praying like they did, with the hope of enriching our private and congregational prayer lives.

Common Worship: Prayer Book 101

Class Title: Common Worship: Prayer Book 101
When:
Mondays, 6:15 – 7:30 pm | June 12–July 31
Led by: Fr. Michael Petty
Pathways 1, & 4

Using The Book of Common Prayer can be difficult if you are unfamiliar with it or if you have come from a non-liturgical background. If you have found yourself puzzled by the liturgy on Sunday or would like to be able to use the Book of Common Prayer in your daily prayer life, this class is for you. Over the course of seven weeks, we will explore the origins of the Book of Common Prayer, the history of Christian liturgy, the Daily Office (Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer), the theology of the sacraments, the Eucharist, Holy Baptism as a model for the Christian life, the Sunday collects and Scripture readings, the liturgies for Holy Matrimony, the anointing of the sick, Reconciliation, Ministry at the Time of Death, the seasons of the Church year, and the Prayer Book vision for individual and common worship and prayer. By the end of the class, you will not only have a better understanding of the “how” of Anglican worship but also a better understanding of the “why”. The resource book for this class is A Walk Through the Prayer Book by Arnold Klukas.

Parenting for Faith

Led by Jason and Frances Merritt

As parents, we are perfectly positioned and perfectly equipped to daily and easily show our children the reality of day-to-day life with God. God has shared with us in the Bible a simple plan for us to encourage our children into a vibrant, two-way relationship with God. This class will help parents to understand this plan and put it into practice. Class topics include finding a spiritual framework to make sense of life, unwinding false views of God, conversational prayer, discipling children in any season of life, prayer ministry for children, and connecting children with the Church.

Perspectives on Christians and Politics: A Discussion

Led by Cliff Nilson

Who does God want you to vote for in November? We don’t have the answer to that question, but we will look at what the Scriptures say about being a good citizen. Using the book, “Jesus and the Powers”, by N.T. Wright and Michael F. Bird, this class will discuss the role of Christians in politics. We will consider the historical perspective, the relationship of church and state, the impact of the kingdom of God in this age, whether Christians can oppose laws or rulers, and what kind of government God approves. The book is recommended but not required.

Being Formed in Beauty

Led by Clifton Rogge, Charles Simeon Fellow

This seven-week class examines the Christian life through the concept of beauty.  From God’s redemptive act expressed in Scripture, to our responding to his active work in us, we behold God more completely when we open ourselves to the various forms of beauty within this self-revelation. The requires a sacrifice on our part that conditions our faith to makes us into disciples who reflect not only Christ’s restorative grace, but the beauty drawn from the life of God himself.  This course is designed to conceptualize beauty as that which draws us into God and that which allows us to participate in God’s self-revelation as we are further transformed into his likeness.

Chorister Camp

Camp is open to all new and returning choristers actively participating in the 2024 fall chorister season.

We are kicking off our fall season this year with a Chorister Camp. This is not just for elementary age, but for every chorister entering K–12th grade to get a head start on the year - you can call it our preseason training. It will be a mix of all sorts of different musical activities, all supporting the health and growth of our group.

If you have been a part of one of our ensembles in the past, we need you and your skills back, especially now. If you haven't done this before, give it a try. We will train you and you will love it! It all starts July 15-19, 9am-12:30pm so mark your calendars. And Youth - don't wait! Request time off from work now!

You need to sing!

Do you realize that the Lord commands us to sing? (Psalm 30, Colossians 3, among many references) Singing is not optional for believers. Our Lord expects us to sing and even with skill as much as our gifts allow (Psalm 33).

We need warrior singers!

The theme of warfare and singing in scripture is a visible theme from King Jehosophat putting his singer soldiers at the front of the battle lines (2 Chronicles 20), to the Apostle Paul talking about fighting evil with songs from the Spirit (Ephesians 5). A singing heart is a heart at war with the work of the evil one and the power of sin.

You need to sing in the Chorister or Youth Ensemble!!

There aren’t many places where you are trained to sing with skill but also with fellow believers in a Christian environment. (Ephesians 5:19).

We need you to sing at St. Peter’s!

The cathedral hosts three services on a normal Sunday, including evensong, which is made up of a lot of music.  We need singers to do the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.

Family Bible School

June 4-6, 5:00–8:00pm

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Why “Family Style”? Discipleship is not an individual event; God created us to journey and support each other in this life together. Family Style means families come to worship, pray, play, and fellowship together as a family and with other families. Our prayer is that this will be an opportunity to help families grow together in their faith and reconnect to God’s kingdom and each other. Our hope is that our families will leave empowered to continue growing their faith together at home.

What is Family Bible School?  Very similar to a regular VBS! There will be singing and dancing, interactive Bible stories, crafts, water games, and more! Children will start with their parents at their picnic blanket on the lawn, but they won’t be sitting for long! Families will be grouped in tribes and will visit stations together. Stations will be inside and outside the church. Kids will still have opportunities to have fun with old friends and make new ones. Parents will have a chance to connect with their peers, too!

What is expected of parents, grandparents, and guardians?  Have fun with your kids! You will help shepherd them to the different stations and help them participate in the activities and program. This is a great opportunity to share your faith and make memories with your children. This is not a drop-off event. Parents are participating for the entire time. We need at least one parent (grandparent or guardian) per family to stay. You are welcome to bring friends! You will be responsible for the children you bring. You will not be alone! There will be volunteers assigned to help and support families as they navigate the different activities and program.

What about my baby or toddlers?  Bring them! Nursery is open for the littlest ones, or they are welcome to stay with your family too!

What about my teens? Teens may participate with your family, or serve in one of the many volunteer positions needed to make FBS a great success!

If I volunteer, can I have dinner?  Yes! Dinner reservations are a part of the volunteer sign up. We want volunteers to come fellowship with dinner and worship with the families!

We prefer to have dinner at home.  No problem! If you would prefer not to partake of the parish dinners, you may certainly eat ahead of time and join us at 5:30 FBS programming, or pack your own picnic and eat with the other families at 5:00pm.

The Great Vigil of Easter

The Great Vigil of Easter is celebrated on Easter Eve. This is a service unlike any other in the Church's year. However, midway through the service, the organ rumbles, bells ring, and the light bursts forth, heralding the miraculous Resurrection of our Lord!

Good Friday Liturgy
Mar

7:00 PM19:00

Good Friday Liturgy

The Good Friday liturgy is the second part of the Triduum - the sacred three days. This most somber of all days is appropriately marked by fasting, abstinence, and penitence, leading us to focus on Jesus and the meaning of his cross. The church is darkened. The bare, stark appearance of the church serves as a reminder of the solemnity and sorrow of this day.

The Lord of Life was rejected, mocked, scourged, and then put to death on the cross. The faithful are reminded of the role which their own sin played in this suffering and agony, as Christ took all sin upon himself, in obedience to his Father’s will. By the cross we are redeemed, set free from bondage to sin and death. The cross is a sign of God’s never-ending love for us. It is a sign of life, in the midst of death.

Maundy Thursday

"So, could you not watch with me one hour?” (Matt 26:40)

Come, watch and pray with Christ for an hour or more at the Cathedral, which will be open throughout the night beginning after the Maundy Thursday Liturgy (7pm) and ending at the Morning Prayer Liturgy on Good Friday (9am). While sign-up is not required, please consider committing to an hour block, on the roster, which will be in the Narthex closer to Holy Week, to ensure minimal coverage throughout the night. If signup for an hour is full, you are still welcome to come at that time.

Maundy Thursday commemorates Jesus' time with His disciples in the Upper Room, where He instituted the Last Supper and commanded His disciples to love one another, showing them an example of servant-love by washing their feet. The word Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum, which means command, as He commanded us both to remember His death through the Supper and to love one another with a self-giving love.

Service of Tenebrae
Mar

7:00 PM19:00

Service of Tenebrae

Tenebrae (Latin for darkness or shadows) has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning services (Matins and Lauds) of the last three days of Holy week, known as the Paschal Triduum. In medieval times Tenebrae came to be celebrated on the preceding evenings. It is a most beloved and hated liturgy because of the shadows of death that begin to cling to our Lord starting with this liturgy on the even of the Wednesday of Holy Week, sometimes called ‘Spy Wednesday’ in reference to the ambush of Jesus by Judas Iscariot.

Apart from the chant of the Lamentations (in which each verse is introduced by a letter of the Hebrew alphabet), the most conspicuous feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights in the church until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains. Toward the end of the liturgy this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the sealing of the tomb by a great stone and all depart in silence. Interestingly, the candle stand is known as a hearse. The Tenebrae service recreates the betrayal, abandonment, and agony of Jesus and it is left unfinished, because the story isn’t over until the Feast of the Resurrection.

Perhaps you have attended numerous services and admired the beauty of the cathedral, but have you considered taking a tour, or even inviting a friend or neighbor to join you for a tour? Tours are given on the second Saturday of each month at 10am.

You can learn about the symbolism of the West end of the building, the architectural details of the spires and crosses, why the construction took 2 years instead of 200, why the older cathedrals took hundreds of years to build, learn about the narthex, why the baptismal font is almost always at the west end, why the floor is supported by the prayers of the people, why the pews are the most expensive wood you will ever sit on, symbolism of the poppyheads on the ends of the pew, symbolism of the nave, roof, and roof support system, how and why Robert Mullins made the crucifix, learn about symbolism of the altar, pulpit, tester over the pulpit, and lectern, learn about the statues made by Granda Liturgical in Spain, the stained glass windows made by Wippell & Co. Glass in Britain, how the stain glass windows are protected, the stations of the cross, the Cathedral organ and why the pulpit has a trap door.

So, consider taking a tour and learning everything you would like to know about your Cathedral.

Pathway 4: Living Out Our Baptism as Public Witnesses For Christ
Led by: Alice Sanderson

Mom to Mom is a biblically based parenting program designed around the Titus 2:4 concept of older women teaching and encouraging younger women in their relationships with their husbands and children. Our time together will include quality instruction in parenting, small group discussion, and the interaction of more experienced mothers with younger women. In our study this fall, Growing Together, we will explore how growing our children involves us growing as moms. All women are welcome to join in as we seek to become equipped, encouraged, and energized as moms in the most significant job in the world—raising the next generation.

Childcare is typically available during Mom-To-Mom meeting times.
